The Apple iPhone 16e is a brand new phone that looks a lot like one released in 2022. But it represents some big shifts in direction for Apple.
As a replacement for the 3rd-gen iPhone SE, the iPhone 16e is Apple's newest entry-level smartphone. And compared with its predecessor it has a bigger screen, a much faster processor, and a higher price tag: the iPhone 16e goes up for pre-order on Friday for $599 and up, and begins shipping February 28th. It's also the first iPhone to feature a new modem developed in-house by Apple rather than a Qualcomm modem.

While the last iPhone SE kept some legacy features like a home button and Touch ID sensor, the iPhone 16e drops both of those features to make room for a larger 6.1 inch display with a notch in the top for a camera and Face ID sensor.
That brings the design of Apple's new entry-level phone more in line with what you get from the company's latest iPhone 16 series flagships. And honestly, despite having a design that more closely resembles the iPhone 14, the specs of the iPhone 16e are much more similar to those of the iPhone 16.
Measuring 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8mm and weighing 167 grams, the iPhone 16e is almost the same size as the iPhone 16 (147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 and 170 grams), and has a nearly identical Super Retina XDR OLED display with 460 pixels per inch. It's also powered by the same Apple A18 processor and support for Apple Intelligence features, has the same USB-C port, and ships with at least 128GB of storage. And Apple has added an Action button to the side of the new phone.
So what's the difference between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16? For one thing there's only a single 48MP rear camera instead of dual cameras. There's the aforementioned notch in the display instead of Apple's newer hole punch-style cutout, not that it's likely to make much difference. And the phone lacks MagSafe support.
The move to an Apple C1 modem also delivers what Apple says is "the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone," which helps explain why the company says the iPhone 16e is actually better than the iPhone 16 in at least one respect: it should get longer battery life. According to Apple, the iPhone 16e should be able to run for up to 21 hours while streaming video, compared with 18 hours for the normal iPhone 16.
Both phones also support Qi wireless charging (but only the iPhone 16 has fast wireless charging) as well as 20W or higher charging with a USB-C power adapter – Apple says you should get about a 50% charge by plugging in either phone for 30 minutes.
