Most smartphones with foldable displays fall into one of two categories: flip phones that fold in half to take up less space in your pocket or phones with small tablet-sized screens that fold to look more like a typical smartphone.
The Huawei Pura X is a new phone that takes a little from column A and a little from column B. When folded in half it looks like a flip phone with a 3.5 inch square cover display. But when unfolded it features 6.3 inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio rather than the 21:9 or higher aspect ratios you'd find on most flip phones.
How did Huawei pull this off? By changing the way you're meant to fold the phone. While most flip phones have screens that open upward, the Huawei Pura X is designed to open sideways, allowing you to access a 16:10 display in landscape orientation. Or you can rotate the screen 90 degrees for portrait use.
When fully unfolded the device measures 143.2 x 91.7 x 7.2mm (5.64″ x 3.61″ x 0.28″). That's a bit small by tablet standards, but the 6.3 inch, 2120 x 1320 pixel OLED display should be a good fit for watching videos, browsing the web, playing games, or performing other actions that are well suited to 16:10 displays, which are commonly used on laptops and sometimes tablets. The display is also an LTPO screen with variable refresh rates from 1 to 120 Hz, 1440 Hz PWM dimming, and up to a 300 touch sampling rate.
When folded, the phone measures 91.7 x 74.3 x 15.1mm (3.61″ x 2.93″ x 0.59″), making it easy to fit in a pocket. The cover display is a 3.5 inch, 980 x 980 pixel, 1-120 Hz LTPO screen with up to a 240 Hz touch sampling rate and 1440 PWM dimming.
Prices for the Huawei Pura X start at 7499 CNY (about $1037) in China for a model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. But like most recent Huawei phones, the Pura X won't be sold in the US and ships with Harmony OS rather than Android. But it's an interesting take on smartphone design.
Other features include support for up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, a 4720 mAh battery, support for 66W fast charging (wired) or 40W wireless charging. It has a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port, a fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone, and Huawei says the Pura X is rated IPX8 for water resistance.
The phone has a camera system that includes a 50MP primary rear camera, a 40MP ultrawide camera, and an 8MP 3.5X telephoto camera. There's a 10.7MP front-facing camera.
