Update: AYANEO AM01S mini PC has a retro design, a 4 inch flip-up display, and AMD Strix Point inside

When AYANEO introduced the AM01S mini PC last year, the company positioned it as a compact computer with a design inspired by classic PCs from the 1980s, but a few upgrades over the original AYANEO AM01 that launched in 2023. For one thing, it had a higher-performance processor. For another, instead of a fake screen only served a cosmetic purpose, the new model had an actual display that could be used as a primary or secondary screen.

Nearly a year later the AYANEO AM01S has yet to actually go on sale. But now the company is re-introducing the little computer and providing a few more details. It's also received a pre-launch spec bump.

Originally expected to launch with an AMD Hawk Point processor (up to a Ryzen 9 8945HS chip), the AM01S has been retooled with an upgraded motherboard and now supports up to an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 Strix Point processor.

That means instead of supporting a processor with up to 8 Zen 4 CPU cores and up to 12-core RDNA 3 graphics, the mini PC will support chips with up to 12 Zen 5/5c CPU cores and up to 16-core RDNA 3.5 graphics plus an NPU that delivers up to 50 TOPS of on-device AI performance.

AYANEO says the AM01S has a 4 inch display that's "been upgraded to a native horizontal display, improving compatibility with system interfaces and third-party applications." While there are still no details about the screen resolution, brightness, or other characteristics, the company says the screen will let you use the mini PC without an external monitor (which could come in handy during setup, or if you're using the system mostly for headless operations, for example), or treat it as a second screen for an extended desktop experience. You can also use it to view system status information including temperature and fan speed, or for widgets that show things like weather forecasts or a clock. It can also be used to display performance information from tools like MSI Afterburner, or "as a control for specific software."

The touchscreen display is surrounded by an aluminum frame, and it can either lie flat against the top of the computer or you can tilt it at up to a 90 degree angle to make the screen easier to see if the AM01S is positioned  so that the screen would otherwise point straight upward.

The AYANEO AM01S has a 1 liter chassis with two SODIMM slots for DDR5-5600 memory, two M.2 2280 slots for PCIe 4.0 SSDs, and a cooling system that includes a large CPU fan, a heat sink, dual heat pipes, and a second fan that covers the SSD. AYANEO says this allows for effective heat dissipation with the system running at up to 65 watts.

Ports include:

  • 2 x USB4 (40 Gbps)
  • 5 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (10 Gbps)
  • 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A (480 Mbps)
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0
  • 2 x 2.5 GbE LAN
