Anbernic is a Chinese company that's responsible for a lot of the cheap-but-sometimes-decent handheld game consoles that have flooded the market in recent years. But the current tit-for-tat tariff battle between the US and China has prompted the company to suspend shipments from China to the US starting today.
Customers in the US can still place orders for Anbernic handhelds. But the company says you'll want to select products that show a "ships from: US" option so that you can be certain you're ordering a product that's already landed in the United States and can be shipped without incurring any additional duty fees.
AnberniC RG 34XX That's probably bad news for anyone in the US who was hoping to get their hands on the upcoming Anbernic RG557 handheld with a 1080p display, MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, and 12GB of LPDDR5X memory.
Anbernic had been planning to sell that handheld for $249 starting later this week, but since it's not yet available for purchase anywhere, it's unlikely that the company already has any units in stock at its US warehouse. So customers in the US will likely have to wait some time before they can get the company's highest-performance Android-powered handheld to date.
I wouldn't be surprised to see other companies take similar actions in the coming months, but the tariffs are likely to affect smaller companies like Anbernic before we see their impact on larger PC and consumer electronics companies.
