Update 4/2/25: Apple's AirPods support page now lists AirPods Max (USB-C) firmware update 7E99 as forthcoming. A new firmware update, version 7E99, has been released for the USB-C AirPods Max, superseding the previous 7A291 version.
The latest AirPods Max firmware, in conjunction with iOS 18.4, introduces lossless and ultra-low latency audio to the USB-C model. This USB-C version supports 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio, enabling a studio-quality listening experience. Apple describes this, along with Personalized Spatial Audio, as delivering a "more sonically accurate, uncompressed, and immersive experience."
This enhanced audio fidelity, coupled with ultra-low latency, allows music professionals to create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking using only a USB-C cable and a Mac with Logic Pro or comparable music production software.
Importantly, lossless audio and ultra-low latency are exclusive to the USB-C AirPods Max, requiring both the latest firmware and pairing with a device running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4.
Firmware installation is initiated by placing the AirPods Max within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then connecting them for charging. The update process may take up to 30 minutes.
You can check your firmware version by going to Settings > Bluetooth and selecting the Info button next to the AirPods Max when they are connected to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
