GPD Pocket 3 mini-laptop gets another spec bump

The GPD Pocket 3 is a mini laptop with an 8 inch FHD+ touchscreen display that can swivel and folds down over the keyboard, allowing you to use this tiny PC as a laptop or tablet. There's also a modular port section that allows you to swap out a USB-A port for an RS-232 or KVM module.

When it first launched in 2021, the Pocket 3 was available with a choice of Intel Core i7-1195G7 or Intel Pentium Silver N6000 processor options. But last year GPD upgraded the processor in the entry-level model to a Pentium Gold 7505 chip. And now the company is giving the base model another spec bump: the entry-level model now has an Intel Core i3-1125G4 processor which should bring a number of significant improvements.

The new model is now available for purchase for $698 through an Indiegogo InDemand campaign and that price covers the cost of a new GPD Pocket 3 with a Core i3 processor as well as all three optional port modules.

While Intel's Core i3-1125G4 processor is an aging chip that was first released in 2021 and has since been discontinued by Intel, it brings several big upgrades over the Pentium Gold 7505 processor.

The Pentium Gold 7505 processor is a 15-watt, 2-core, 4-thread chip with support for CPU frequencies up to 3.5 GHz and support for PCIe 3.0, while the Core i3-1224G is a 28-watt, 4-core, 8-thread chip with support for frequencies up to 3.7 GHz and PCI 4.0 support.

Both have 1.25 GHz Intel UHD graphics with 48 execution units, so there shouldn't be much difference in graphics performance. And GPD says single-core CPU performance is similar as well. But the company says multi-core CPU performance is 40% better.

In addition to the processor upgrade, GPD says the new entry-level Pocket 3 comes with a PCIe 4.0 Gen 4 x4 SSD for faster read and write speeds, and a faster USB port (one of the Type-A ports now support 10 Gbps) speeds).
