I've lost count of the number of companies that have launched software designed to bridge the divide between smartphones and PCs. Microsoft has Phone Link. Samsung has Samsung Flow. And over the years I've seen PC makers introduce and eventually discontinue a bunch of proprietary solutions.
Last year Intel introduced its entry in this space: Intel Unison is a tool that lets you pair your devices to view mobile notifications on your PC, take phone calls on a PC, synchronize photos, drag and drop files, and more. But two years later Intel is discontinuing Unison. Intel says "the first step in its wind-down process is ending service for most platforms at the end of June 2025."
That note is oddly missing from the Intel Unison website at time of publication, but it's included at the top of the Unison app listings in the App Store, Google Play Store, and Microsoft Store. While Unison will stop working on most PCs this summer, Intel says you will still be able to use the service on Lenovo Aura Edition computers through the end of the year. But overall it seems pretty clear that the software's days are numbered.
Intel hasn't given an official reason for discontinuing Unison, but it's unclear how widely used it was – the software required a relatively recent PC running Windows 11 or later, with a 12th-gen Intel processor or newer, and support for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 or higher. Microsoft's Phone Link software, by comparison, works with most PCs running Windows 10 or later.
In what may or may not be related news, Intel's new CEO has said recently that the company plans to spin off assets that aren't core to the company's current business plan. In the case of Unison, it looks like Intel is winding down rather than spinning off.
