The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s is a mobile workstation-class laptop that combines powerful hardware with a relatively compact design. Last year Lenovo introduced 5th-gen models with Intel and AMD processor options, and now it looks like the company is getting ready to bring a big performance boost with the new ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 series.

While Lenovo hasn't officially launched a new model yet, details posted to the Lenovo Malaysia website describe a 6th-gen model with up to an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 370 Strix Point processor.

That's a 12-core, 24-thrad processor with 16-core RDNA 3 integrated graphics and a Ryzen AI NPU with up to 50 TOPS Of AI performance.

The laptop also has two SODIMM slots with support for up to 96GB of total DDR5-5600 memory, an M.2 2280 slot with support for up to 2TB of PCIe Gen 4 x4 storage, and a MediaTek MT7925 wireless card with support for WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 and optional support for an NFC module and 4G LTE or 5G modems.

Display options range from a 14 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS LCD touch or non-touch display to a 2880 x 1800 pixel OLED display panel. And the laptop has a 5MP webcam with a privacy shutter and optional support for an IR camera for face recognition.

Ports include:

  • 2 x Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps)
  • 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A (5 Gbps)
  • 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
  • 1 x HDMI 2.1
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio
  • There's also optional support for a smart card reader and models with cellular modems also have a nano SIM card slot.

If the notebook has one weak point it's that a top tier model only has a 57 Wh battery, while lower-priced configurations (with Ryzen AI 7 PRO 340 or 350 chips) come with 52.5 Wh batteries.

But that decision was probably made to help keep this laptop thin and light – it measures just 316 x 224 x 16mm (12.4″ x 8.8″ x 0.6″) at its thickest point and weighs just 1.39 kg (3.1 pounds). Since the notebook supports USB-C charging, it should be relatively easy to pack a 65W or higher capacity charger in your bag in case you do need to refuel on the go.

Since the ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 AMD edition isn't yet available for purchase there's no word on the price. But I wouldn't expect it to be cheap – laptops with AMD Strix Point processors generally aren't, and neither or ThinkPad P14s models. The 5th-gen AMD edition currently sells for $1279 and up, while the Intel version starts at $1879.
