For the past few years, a company called 8849 has been selling rugged Android phones under the Tank brand. They have special features like ultrabright flashlights, built-in projectors, and batteries so massive that you might as well think of the devices as power banks with built-in phone functionality.
Now the 8849 has built a larger Tank (or two of them, really). The 8849 Tank Pad is a 10.95 inch tablet with similar specs to the Tank 3 Pro smartphone that launched last year. And the 8849 Tank Pad E is a cheaper model that trades some performance in order to keep the price a little lower.
Tank Pad The Tank Pad sells for $600 and has a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage plus support for global 4G LTE and 5G networks, while the Tank Pad E is a $480 model with an older MediaTek Helio G99 chip, 12GB of RAM, and 4G LTE support, but no support for 5G. It has the same 512GB of storage though.
Otherwise the two tablets are pretty similar. Both feature 10.95 inch 1920 x 1200 pixel displays with support for refresh rates up to 120 Hz as well as a 100-lumen projector that you can set up for watching movies on the go. While that projector isn't super bright, it could make movie night possible when you're camping (or hanging out in the back yard) on a dark night.
There's also a camping light on the back of the tablet which should get a lot brighter than a typical smartphone camera LED light and the 8849 Tank and Tank E tablets feature water and dust-proof cases that are MIL-STD-810H tested and rated IP68/IP69K.
Other features include a microSD card reader with support for up to 2TB of removable storage, stereo speakers, support for 66 watt fast charging, and 21,000 mAh batteries that should provide days of run time. Fun fact: the battery is actually a little smaller than the 23,800 mAh battery in the Tank 3 Pro smartphone.
There are a few things to keep in mind before spending money on these tablets though. One is that 8849 isn't exactly a big name in the Android phone or tablet space and I wouldn't necessarily expect the same level of support and service that you'd get from more established companies. Another is the related fact that the tablets ship with Android 14, an operating system released in October, 2023. There's no guarantee that they'll ever be updated to run Android 15 or Android 16 (which is due to launch soon).
