Two decades after first showing that it's possible to use computers for real-time voice and video communication using peer-to-peer networking, Skype shut down for good this week. Microsoft bought the service in 2011 and maintained it for a while, eventually moving it from a hybrid P2P service to one that was powered by the company's servers… but over time Skype started to feel stuck in the past while Microsoft focused on building its Teams telecommunication tool.
Earlier this year the company announced that the end was nigh, and now it has arrived. Microsoft is offering path to migrate from Skype to Teams, but I imagine some long-time Skype users have probably already moved on to Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, or other tools instead.
Skype In other recent tech news from around the web, in addition to launching new Surface hardware, Microsoft has previewed new AI features coming to those PCs (and other Windows 11 PCs with 40+ TOPS NPUs), the company has also added official support for Fedora Linux to the Windows Subsystem for Linux, a new class action suit aims to get Apple to pay developers for money they've theoretically lost out on while the company defied a court order for the past few years, and the latest tariffs on shipments from China to the US have resulted in some folks being asked to pay more than the value of the products they purchased in duties before their shipments are released.
