Installing app updates on a phone is pretty simple these days: if you have an iPhone, the App Store handles updates. And while Android users can sideload apps or install third-party app stores, most app updates are probably handled by the Google Play Store.
But installing updates on a PC? That's a messier proposition. Microsoft has its own app store, but odds are are that most of the apps you're using were downloaded and installed from the web and feature their own app update systems (if they have one at all). Keeping track of which apps are up to date can be tricky. Now Microsoft is testing a new method for making things simpler… at least in theory.

The company is inviting developers to participate in a private preview of a "Windows Update orchestration platform" that will allow updates for MSIX, APPX, and some Win32 apps to be handled by Windows Update.
That means users would be able to see update notifications, history, and other information all in one place. It could also make it easier to schedule updates, set group policies, and adjust other settings.
But unless it's universally adopted, it's likely that this will just make things even messier than they already are with some apps getting updates from the Microsoft Store, others from Windows Update, some using third-party systems, and some requiring you to manually download and install updates.
Windows Update might begin handling updates for third-party apps soon. Microsoft is inviting developers to join a private preview for a unified app update system that would handle OS, driver, and some app updates in one place. techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/windows…

So iOS and macOS 26 are coming out in 2025… seems like the company is taking cues from the car industry to always make its newest products feel a little newer than they really are.
