Eighteen years ago a Firefox browser extension called Read It Later was launched, providing a way to save web pages to… well, read later. Over time the service added features, changed its name to Pocket, launched mobile apps, and got acquired by Firefox maker Mozilla.
Now Mozilla has announced plans to shut down Pocket on July 8, 2025. Users can export (some of) their data until October, and Pocket Premium subscribers will receive prorated refunds.

Why shut down now? Mozilla says that it's because "the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved," but a bigger factor is probably that Mozilla has limited resources and shifting some of them away from maintaining and supporting Pocket will let Mozilla shift its focus to "new Firefox features that people need most."
Like what? "vertical tabs, smart search, and more AI-powered features," apparently.
Mozilla is also killing off Fakespot, a tool for helping figure out which product reviews on the web are real and which are fake.
Mozilla is shutting down Pocket on July 8th, 2025, but users will be able to export data until October. Originally an independent browser extension called Read it Later, Pocket was acquired by Mozilla in 2017. support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fut…
