Anbernic is bringing AI to handheld game consoles… and it kind of makes sense

Chinese handheld game console maker Anbernic is jumping on the AI bandwagon. Recent software updates for four of the company's recent devices bring a new Anbernic AI feature that includes many of the greatest hits of the AI world including a chat bot and support for using AI to generate images from text prompts or alter existing images.

But there are also some features that are specifically designed for gamers, including support for real-time translations for text in 11 different languages. In other words, Anbernic AI will let English speakers play Japanese or Chinese games that haven't been ported to English by reading the text on the screen and adding English-language overlays. That said, it's hard to find older console games that haven't been patched by hobbyists with translated text.

Anbernic has posted a short video demonstrating some of the Anbernic AI features, and it looks like the new text doesn't replace the original language, so the screen might look a little cluttered. But it might help you play games that would otherwise be unplayable to folks who don't read the language.

Other features include the ability to use a chat bot to ask for tips or tricks for getting through difficult parts of a game, and an AI voice chat feature.

Anebernic AI is available in the latest OTA updates for the Android-based operating systems of the Anbernic RG Cube, Anbernic RG 406V, Anbernic RG 406H, and Anbernic RG556 handhelds. You can find download links and a few more details at the Anbernic blog.

One thing that's unclear from the article though, is whether the AI features run natively on the handheld or if you need an internet connection to use Anbernic AI.
