ONEXSUGAR Sugar 1 is a handheld game console that transforms into a dual-screen device

At first glance it would be easy to mistake the ONEXSUGAR Sugar 1 for a typical handheld game console. It has a display sandwiched between a set of game controllers. But look a little closer and you'll notice that this handheld is a little thicker than most… because there's a second screen that hangs out behind the primary display and flips upward when you want to use the Sugar 1 as a dual-screen device.

There are also lines separating the controllers from the screen. That's not because they're detachable (à la Nintendo Switch or Lenovo Legion Go). Instead it's because they can flip upward so they're above the display. Since posting a teaser for the upcoming handheld in late 2024, One Netbook has slowly been revealing more details ahead of a crowdfunding campaign that's set to begin in July.

The ONEXSUGAR Sugar 1 is the result of a collaboration between One Netbook (the maker of the ONEXPLAYER line of handheld gaming PCs) and SugarCubes (a Chinese design firm that's dabbled in unusual handhelds in recent years).

In March One Netbook launched a preview page for its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign and released a teaser video giving us a better look at the handheld. And this week the company posted another video with some additional details.

So now we know that the ONEXSUGAR Sugar 1 is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 chip used in the AYANEO Pocket S3. But while the AYANEO handheld has a single 6.3 inch display, the Sugar 1 has a 6.01 inch primary display and a 3.92 inch second screen.

What makes the handheld is the highly unusual dual-screen + transformer design that lets you flip the small secondary display upward when you need it and hide it when you don't. This could make this an interesting platform for use while playing Nintendo DS-style games, or for keeping your eye on a chat, map, or other function during a gaming session.

But the design also leads to some other oddities. For example instead of a D-Pad on the left side of the device and action buttons on the right, there are two sets of action buttons, presumably to give the controllers a symmetrical design so you can flip the console over and use it with the smaller second screen on the bottom and have access to the same controller.

Some other features that have been confirmed include support for WiFi 7, an Android-based operating system, and RGB lighting effects under the joysticks and on the side of the handheld.

One Netbook still hasn't revealed the price for the ONEXSUGAR yet.
