Amazon Kindle Colorsoft prices now start at $250 thanks to a new 16GB model

The Kindle Colorsoft is Amazon's first Kindle eReader with an E Ink color display. It's also the most expensive Kindle that doesn't have stylus support – when Amazon launched the Kindle Colorsoft in October the only model available was a premium "Signature Edition" device with 32GB of RAM and a $280 price tag.

Now Amazon has introduced a 16GB model that's a little cheaper: the new entry-level Kindle Colorsoft has 16GB of storage and sells for $250. But you do lose more than 16GB of storage if you opt for the cheaper model.

Since the Kindle Colorsoft 16GB isn't a Signature Edition device, it lacks support for wireless charging and lacks a sensor for automatic screen brightness adjustments. But one signature feature does carry over – there are no lock-screen ads included, so you don't have to pay extra to remove the ads the way you would with lower-cost Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite models.

Other than that, the new Kindle Colorsoft is pretty much the same as the pricier model. So if you don't need those features, it's nice to have a slightly cheaper option, I guess.

Both measure have 7 inch E Ink touchscreen displays with pixel densities of 300 pixels per inch for black and white content or 150 ppi for color. Both measure 177 x 128 x 8mm (about 7″ x 5″ x 0.3″).

The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition 32GB model does weigh a little more, probably because of its wireless charging features. But at 219 grams (7.7 ounces), I doubt most people would notice the extra weight – the Kindle Colorsoft 16GB weighs 215 grams (7.6 ounces)

Both versions are IPX8 rated for water resistance, support dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth, and have USB Type-C ports. Amazon says you can expect up to eight weeks of battery life if you read for a half hour a day with the wireless features turned off and the front light brightness set to 13. It takes 2.5 hours to fully recharge the eReader using a 9W USB power adapter.

Amazon has also introduced a new $270 Kindle Colorsoft Kids bundle that includes the new 16GB Colorosft, a cover, parental control software, a 2-year worry-free guarantee, and a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+.
