Semiconductor manufacturing company GlobalFoundries has announced plans to acquire chip design company MIPS.
While GlobalFoundries says it plans to continue to operate MIPS as a standalone business, the move will bring together two big players in the chip industry, potentially creating a one-stop-shop for RISC-V design and manufacturing.

MIPS is a company that's been around since 1985, with early products including server and PC chips based on MIPS architecture. But the company has been bought and sold a few times since then, and eventually MIPS got out of the MIPS business altogether and a few years ago the company pivoted to designing RISC-V processors.
In an interview with EE Times, MIPS CEO Sameer Wasson says the acquisition will give the chip designer the resources to accelerate its pivot to RISC-V with a focus on edge AI, automotive, and "application-specific real-time processors."
The acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2025, assuming it's signed off on by regulators.
