The Liberux NEXX was designed to be the most powerful Linux phone to date, with features including a Rockchip RK3588S processor, support for up to 32GB of user-replaceable RAM and 512GB of storage, an OLED display, and support for 5G networks.
But when the Liberux team launched a crowdfunding campaign in early June the nearly $1.7 million goal seemed like a moonshot… especially for a device with a $1485 price tag. When things got off to a glacially slow start, Liberux introduced lower cost options starting at $900. But with just over a day to go, Liberux has struggled to make even one tenth of that, so it seems like the campaign will fail. Liberux says it's not done though.
In an update posted to social media and on the Indiegogo crowdfunding page, Liberux says that even though it's unlikely to meet its goal this time around, there are plans to launch another campaign in the future, but only after there's a functional prototype to show off.
At this point, the Liberux NEXX is more concept than reality. The first prototype of a development board was only recently manufactured, and there's a lot of work that needs to be done to put that board into a battery-powered phone with a display, wireless radios, and all the other goodies you'd expect from a modern phone.
So far 120 people have backed the (likely doomed) first crowdfunding campaign, and Liberux says it will offer a "special edition" with "unique numbering and a thank-you letter signed by the entire Liberux team" to send to folks who backed this campaign (assuming the sign up for the next one).
