Libre Computer has revealed that its working on new compute modules that use the same form factor as Raspberry Pi's CM4 and CM5, although there are a few differences in the pin layout, so it's unclear if they'll work with the same carrier boards.
But Libre Computer says its coming modules are more energy-efficient thanks to "low power state support with features like wake-on-LAN/IR/IO/CEC and wake-on-camera/display." These tiny computers are also powered by Amlogic processors rather than the Broadcom chips preferred by Raspberry Pi.
Libre Computers hasn't revealed full specifications for the upcoming compute modules yet, but the company says it'll use the Solitude and Alta names for them, which suggests they could share some features with two of the company's most recent single-board computers:
The Libre Computer Alta is a model released in late 2023 with an Amlogic A311D hexa-core processor featuring four ARM Cortex-A72 CPU cores, two Cortex-A53 cores, Mali-G52 quad-core graphics, and a 5 TOPS NPU.
And the Libre Computer Solitude was released in early 2024 as a cheaper model with an Amlogic S905XD3 quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor, Mali-G31 dual-core graphics, and a 1.2 TOPS NPU.
It's unclear at this point if the new compute modules will feature the same chips as those SBCs, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. I also wouldn't be horribly surprised if they used different processors though – Libre Computers could still use the Alta brand to describe a higher-performance model and the Solitude name for a cheaper model.
