Pebble Time 2 specs and design finalized ahead of the $225 smartwatch’s launch

The Pebble Time 2 is a smartwatch that some folks have been waiting nearly a decade for. And now it's almost ready to start shipping. While the original company called Pebble shut down in 2016, founder Eric Migicovsky introduced a new company called Core Devices earlier this year, and announced that the first two devices would be smartwatches that pick up where the originals left off.

The Pebble 2 Duo is an entry-level watch with a $149 price tag, a monochrome display, and an estimated ship date of September. And the Pebble Time 2 is a new watch that's inspired by a model that was scrapped before it could launch in 2016. This week Migicovsky unveiled an updated design for the Pebble Time 2 and announced that the specifications have been finalized. The new Pebble Time 2 is available for pre-order for $225, and expected to ship in December.

In terms of physical design, the new Pebble Time 2 has an updated look with a less boxy-looking design, but the display, buttons, and other features remain unchanged. The front, back, and buttons will be made from stainless steel, and there will be four color options for the wristband and sides including all-black, black and silver, red, or blue.

Other updates include the addition of a multicolor RGB LED backlight, a compass sensor, a screw-mounted back cover, and a second microphone that might be used for noise cancellation (although it sounds like that may not be active yet).

The watch features a 1.5 inch, 200 x 228 pixel touchscreen display with support for 64 colors and a hardened glass cover, a speaker, vibration motor, and sensors including a heart rate monitor and motion sensors for step and sleep tracking. It's also expected to be waterproof, although the IP rating hasn't been finalized yet.
