HMD Touch 4G is a 3.2 inch feature phone that makes video calls and supports cloud apps

The HMD Touch 4G is an unusual looking phone that features a 3.2 inch, 320 x 240 pixel IPS LCD touchscreen and relatively thick borders along the top (where you'll find a speaker and camera) and bottom (which houses a home button).

HMD's new phone borrows some classic design features from Nokia's Lumia brand, including colorful rounded sides and a large circular camera bump on the back. But what makes it unusual is that it's basically a feature phone with a few smart features that allow HMD to call this a "hybrid" phone. As expected, the HMD Touch 4G is now available in India, where it's priced at ₹4,999 ($56), but it's currently on sale for about $10 off as part of a launch promotion.

The phone very much has the specs of a feature phone rather than a smartphone. It's powered by a Unisoc T127 processor, which is a 1 GHz single-core ARM Cortex-A7 chip and it has just 64MB of RAM and 128MB of storage, although there is support for microSD cards for up to 32GB of removable storage.

Other features include a 1950 mAh battery, a USB Type-C port and headphone jack, and support for WiFi 4, Bluetooth 5 and 4G LTE (with dual SIM support). There's a 2MP primary camera and a 0.3 MP front camera and the phone runs "RTOS Touch," which is to say it has the kind of l ightweight real-time operating system found on feature phones.

So what makes it a hybrid device? HMD says the HMD Touch 4G supports "cloud phone service" as well as voice and video messaging.

That cloud service isn't all that impressive – it's basically a web browser that lets you do some light web browsing or possibly even run some web apps. HMD says users can "check the latest videos, view tomorrow's weather forecast, or read up on the latest cricket results" using "cloud-hosted browser shortcuts."

Voice and video messaging, meanwhile, is courtesy of the Express Chat app, which lets you use text, voice, or video to communicate with other folks… as long as they're using the same app. The apps is available for free on Android and iOS, so other users don't need to be using an HMD Touch 4G. But it's still interesting to note that the phone doesn't support WhatsApp or other more widely used services.

It's unclear if the HMD Touch 4G will be sold outside of India.
