Dasung’s new tablets have E Ink displays with 50 Hz refresh rate

Most of the companies that use E Ink displays for consumer electronics put them into devices made for reading eBooks. But Chinese company Dasung has carved out a niche for itself by specializing in E Ink monitors, including some models with special features like the ability to push frame rates that rival what you'd expect from an LCD or OLED display.

Now the company is bringing that technology to more portable devices. The Dasung Not-eReader 078 and Not-eReader 103 are E Ink tablets with support for screen refresh rates as high as 50 Hz.

As the names suggest, Dasung wants to make it clear that these devices are not simply made for reading eBooks. You can certainly do that, but these are fully functional Android tablets that support a wide range of applications.

That doesn't exactly make them unique – several companies including Onyx BOOX and BigMe also ship E Ink tablets with Android-based software. And those companies also offer software to enable high screen refresh rates. But it's still pretty unusual to find models capable of 50 Hz, which should be fast enough to handle video playback and other animations with ease.

Keep in mind that E Ink displays aren't really designed for those kinds of speeds though, so there are tradeoffs involved when pushing the displays to their limits. While you� �can get high frame rates from Dasung's new tablets, you'll get better image quality and less ghosting (where you can see the remnants of previous images) if you stick to lower refresh rates. Battery life will also probably be longer at lower refresh rates.

Dasung hasn't provided any details about global pricing or availability yet, but the company has shared some short previews for both of its new tablets on Chinese social media. I've found conflicting reports about specs though.

For example, ITHome reports that the Dasung Not-eReader 078 has a 7.8 inch, 1872 x 1404 pixel greyscale display with 300 pixels per inch, an unspecified processor, and 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage plus a 5600 mAh battery. But Hey Up Now says it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor, 128GB of storage, and a 3200 mAh battery, while the larger Dasung Not-eReader 103 has a 5,000 mAh battery.

The larger model is also said to have the same 1872 x 1404 pixel display resolution, sugg esting that it has a 227 ppi display. And according to Hey Up Now, both models support digital pens with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

But given that Dasung hasn't made any English-language announcements yet, I'd take all of thos specs with a grain of salt. For now, here's a first look at the two upcoming tablets:
