Framework Laptop 13 Pro is a modular laptop with longer battery life, better screen, and up to Intel Core Ultra X7 Panther Lake

Framework has been selling modular, customizable, repairable, and upgradable laptop since 2021. But while most laptop makers ship brand new models every year or two, Framework has taken a different approach by keeping the same chassis for its 13 inch laptop year after year, which means that every time the company has released a new mainboard, customers have been able to buy a new mainboard and use it upgrade their older laptops.

Now, Framework is giving its 13 inch laptop the biggest overhaul to date with the introduction of a new Framework Laptop 13 Pro. Not only is it available with up to an Intel Core Ultra X9 388H Panther Lake processor with 12-core Intel Arc integrated graphics, but it also has a bigger battery, better display, and all-metal chassis. It goes up for pre-order today for and ships in June. And it’s backward-compatible with older Framework Laptop 13 products, which means you can use an old mainboard with the new chassis… or you can upgrade an older lapt op piece by piece to turn it into a Framework Laptop 13 Pro.

Prices start at $1199 for a Framework Laptop 13 Pro DIY Edition (bring your own memory, storage, and OS), or $1499 for a fully assembled, pre-built laptop with Ubuntu Linux (you can also pay extra for Windows).

Keep in mind that these prices are for entry-level models with Intel Core Ultra 5 325 processors with 4-core graphics, but Framework also plans to offer models with Core Ultra X7 358H and Core Ultra X9 388H chips. Or if you prefer an AMD chip, there are Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 options as well.

Framework says the new laptop has a 13.5 inch, 2880 x 1920 pixel matte LCD touchscreen display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, 30-120 Hz refresh rate, and up to 700 nits brightness, a 74 Wh battery that’s 22% larger than the one used in previous-generation Framework 13 laptops, and significantly longer battery life not only due to the battery upgrade, but also the energy-efficiency Panther Lake processor options.

Other upgrades include a haptic touchpad, the addition of stereo side-firing speakers with Dolby Atmos sound, and the inclusion of a 100W power supply.

Framework’s first “pro” branded laptop is still customizable – it supports Framework’s Expansion modules, allowing you to choose between USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, and other ports… and even swap them out on the fly. It’s still designed to be repairable: Framework even includes a screwdriver in the b ox. And the memory and storage are still designed to be easy to upgrade.

But while early Framework Laptop mainboards had two SODIMM slots with support for user-replaceable DDR memory, Intel’s Core Ultra X Panther Lake processors require LPDDR5 RAM. So the Framework Laptop 13 Pro uses LPCAMM2, a new(ish) standard that lets you remove and replace LPDDR5 memory, among other things.

At a time when RAM is extraordinarily expensive, that means that you can buy a laptop with just as much memory as you need (or can afford) today, while retaining the option to upgrade in the future.
