Windows Update is one of those features that it’s easy to have a hate/hate relationship with. Sure, it’s important to install security updates, bug fixes, and performance enhancements in a timely fashion. But sometimes you don’t want to do it right now, because it takes too long for your computer to shut down or start up… if it starts up at all. It’s not unheard of for a bad update to cause problems.
So it’s nice to see that Microsoft is rolling out a few changes that will give users more control over how and when their computers install Windows updates.

For one thing, you can choose to skip updates during the out of box experience, which basically helps you set up and start using a new PC more quickly. Another change lets you pause updates for up to 35 days… and then extend those pauses indefinitely. And a third, which I’m very happy to see, will let you shut down or restart your PC without installing an update, even if it’s already downloaded and ready to go.
There’s nothing fun about shutting down your laptop at home, getting to work and setting it up for a presentation… only to find that you’ve got to wait 5-6 minutes for Windows to finish installing an update. The ability to skip an update when shutting down your PC will help you avoid that pain.
Here’s a roundup of recent tech news from a round the web.
Updates to Windows Update will let users setup a new PC more quickly by skipping updates on first startup, pause updates indefinitely, and shut down or restart a PC without updating even when updates are available. blogs.windows.com/windows-insi…

Valve’s new Steam Controller goes on sale May 4 for $99. But you’ll have to wait for the Steam Machine or Steam Frame. Why release the controller first? Because it isn’t affected by the RAM shortage like other Steam hardware since it doesn’t have RAM. www.polygon.com/steam-contro…

Things I learned today: E Ink writing tablet maker reMarkable is laying off 200 people, or about 40% of its 500 person workforce. Also: reMarkable was a big enough company to employ 500 people (until now). e24.no/naeringsliv/…

The new Amazon Fire TV Ethernet Adapter is the first with a USB-C port and Gigabit Ethernet… but since it’s USB 2.0, it will actually be limited to less than 480 Mbps speed (which is still better than the 10/100 on older models). www.aftvnews.com/amazon-upgra…
