HMD is winding down its phone business in the US market

After Nokia got out of the smartphone business, a Finnish company called HMD Global picked up the torch and started selling a line of Nokia-branded smartphones and feature phones. More recently HMD transitioned to using its own name for its smartphones. But good luck getting one in the future if you live in the United States.

While you can still find some of the company's phones from several online retailers, the "where to buy" links on HMD's US website are all dead. And in a statement provided to Wired reviews editor Julian Chokkattu, the company says it's "made the decision to scale back our US operations."

HMD Skyline

HMD does plan to continue offering support for existing products that are available in the US. But I wouldn't expect new models to be sold in the US through official channels moving forward.

That's not a huge surprise. The United States is a complicated market for phone makers to do business in, which is why some companies (like Fairphone) don't officially support the US at all, while others (like Nothing) take a more cautious approach, (the Nothing Phone 3 will be the company's first flagship to be widely available in the US).

And that's before you get to the impact of US tariffs, which will likely raise the cost of shipping phones to the US… but not in a predictable manner, as the Trump administration has been shifting the level of tariffs as well as their implementation dates for months.

You can still find a few recent HMD phones at Amazon, Best Buy, and other shops in the US. So it's not too late to pick up a repairable HMD Skyline, an HMD Fusion with support for modular accessories, a budget HMD Vibe, or a hot pink HMD Barbie Phone. But with HMD scaling back US operations, it's unclear how long the company will continue to offer software updates, customer service, or warranty repairs for those devices.
