Mini PC maker PELADN has been selling graphics docks for a few years, allowing you to connect a desktop graphics card to a laptop or desktop computer. The first was the PELADN Link S1, which uses a Thunderbolt 4 connection. Then came the Link S-2 with an OCuLink connection for higher speeds.
Now the company has introduced its first model featuring Thunderbolt 5 support. The PELADN Link S-3 is debuting first in China, but will likely roll out to other markets soon.
Like earlier models, the Link S-3 is a small dock with a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot and a connector for an ATX or SFX power supply. The dock is designed so that a connected graphics card will be exposed to the air rather than confined in an enclosed space, so not only is there no power supply built in, but there are no fans for cooling – but most modern high-performance graphics cards have their own fans.
While this type of dock is mainly used to add discrete graphics to a PC that wouldn't otherwise have a dedicated GPU, the Link S-3 also has a few other features up its sleeve.
It has two Thunderbolt 5 ports with theoretical support for bidirectional data transfer speeds up to 80 Gbps, and in addition to adding a GPU to your PC, the dock has an M.2 2280 slot with support for a PCIe 3.0 x1 SSD, a 2.5 GbE Ethernet port (with a RTL8156B controller), a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, and an SD card reader.
According to ITHome, the dock goes up for pre-order in China on July 26th for 1,599 CNY (about $223).
