Lilbits: 8TB SD cards are coming soon (likely for a small fortune)

It’s been more than two years since SanDisk announced plans to launch 4TB SD cards based on the SDUC standard. They haven’t actually arrived yet, so take this next part with a grain of salt, but during the Computex show in Taiwan earlier this month, SanDisk indicated that those 4TB SDUC cards really are coming soon… along with even larger 8TB cards.

Unfortunately they won’t be much use unless you’ve got compatible hardware, because you’ll need a new card reader that supports the latest standard. SDUC card readers are backward compatible, meaning they can read older cards. But you’ll need a new camera, PC, phone, or tablet with support for SDUC cards if you actually want to use the new cards. And given the rising costs of flash storage, I also expect you’ll need something else if you want to buy an 8TB SD card anytime soon: a lot of money.

Here’s a roundup of recent tech news from around the web.

Two years after they were first announced, the first 4TB and 8TB SD and microSD cards are said to be coming soon… although you’ll need a device with an SDUC card reader to use them. www.notebookcheck.net/SanDisk-s-fi…

After facing delays, Valv e says its Steam Machine mini PC for gaming and Steam Frame headset will begin “shipping this summer.” There’s still no word on how much they’ll cost, but given RAM & storage prices, probably more than originally planned. steamcommunity.com/groups/steam…
