Micro Journal Rev.2.1 is a distraction-free writerDeck with a full-sized keyboard and flip-up display

The Micro Journal line of devices are portable writing machines, or "writerDecks" designed to provide a distraction-free experience thanks to a combination of high-quality keyboards, small screens, and just enough hardware and software to let you quickly boot into a word processor.

Developer Un Kyu Lee has designed a bunch of Micro Journal models over the past two years – you can buy several recent models from his Tindie store or make your own using the design files and firmware available from GitHub. The upcoming Micro Journal Rev.2.1 is an intriguing new entry in the lineup that combines features from the Rev.2 and Rev.7.

Like the Micro Journal Rev.2, the new Rev.2.1 combines a customizable mechanical keyboard with a small screen that flips upward when you need it and folds down when you don't. And like the Rev.2, the new model is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W and a Linux-based operating system, making this model usable as a full-fledged computer and not just a writerDeck.

But while the Rev.2 was a compact device with a clamshell design that allowed you to fold it up like a little laptop, with the screen completely covering the keyboard, that was only possible because the keyboard was small. I mean, the keys were full-sized, b ut there was only room for 48 of them, and they were arranged in an ortholinear layout, which isn't to everyone's taste.

The new Rev.2.1 has a 69-key keyboard with room for a full-sized space bar and wide Ctrl, Shift, Alt, Tab, and other keys, among other things. It's the same keyboard found in the Micro Journal Rv.7. But since the keyboard is much larger than the display, this isn't a clamshell device. Instead it looks like a large keyboard or typewriter with a flip-up screen.

While the new model isn't available for purchase yet, Un Kyu Lee says the design and components have been finalized, so we also know that it has a four LiPo 18650 battery cells inside the case that should provide around 12 hours of battery life, two knobs on the side that can be used for navigating up, down, left, or right, and a USB port that allows you to connect a USB flash drive or mouse.
